چکیده

Ten years ago, Webster et al. documented a large and significant increase in both the number as well as the percentage of category 4 and 5 hurricanes for all global basins from 1970 to 2004, and this manuscript examines whether those trends have continued when including 10 additional years of data. In contrast to that study, as shown here, the global frequency of category 4 and 5 hurricanes has shown a small, insignificant downward trend while the percentage of category 4 and 5 hurricanes has shown a small, insignificant upward trend between 1990 and 2014. Accumulated cyclone energy globally has experienced a large and significant downward trend during the same period. The primary reason for the increase in category 4 and 5 hurricanes noted in observational datasets from 1970 to 2004 byWebster et al. is concluded to be due to observational improvements at the various global tropical cyclone warning centers, primarily in the first two decades of that study.

A More General Framework for Understanding Atlantic Hurricane Variability and Trends

1767 NOVEMBER 2007 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | R ecent literature has been refocusing on the association between tropical North Atlantic Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) and Atlantic hurricane activity. Emanuel (2005) demonstrated this relationship using a power dissipation index (PDI), which depends on storm intensity and the lifetime of each storm over each hurricane season. Emanuel’...

Comment on "Changes in tropical cyclone number, duration, and intensity in a warming environment".

Analyses of tropical cyclone records from the western North Pacific reveal that the recent increase in occurrence of intense typhoons reported by Webster et al. (Reports, 16 Sep. 2005, p. 1844) is not a trend. Rather, it is likely a part of the large interdecadal variations in the number of intense typhoons related to similar temporal fluctuations in the atmospheric environment.

Impact of data uncertainty on the spatio-temporal distribution of Australian cyclones, 1906-2006

Tropical cyclones (known elsewhere as hurricanes or typhoons) regularly track through Australia’s northern coastal regions (Figure 1). Data documenting the basic characteristics of cyclones in the Australian region is available from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) as early as 1906. This data set (freely available in ASCII format at http://www.bom.gov.au) records some 41 attributes (most of whic...

SIXTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP on TROPICAL CYCLONES Topic 2.5 : Physical Processes and Downstream Impacts of Extratropical Transition Rapporteur:

The importance of the ET in influencing the dynamics of the atmosphere has become more evident in recent years. The occurrence of ET events over the North Pacific has been observed to coincide with periods of reduced forecast model skill (Jones et al. 2003). Harr et al. (2004) examined downstream propagation of increased ensemble standard deviation in mid-tropospheric heights from several opera...

Reply to comment by K. Emanuel on ‘‘Sea-surface temperatures and tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin’’

[1] Most recent studies of tropical cyclones and their relationship to changing environmental conditions, including sea surface temperatures (SST), have examined regionalscale seasonal averages in comparison with basin-wide seasonal tropical cyclone characteristics [e.g., Emanuel, 2005; Webster et al., 2005; Hoyos et al., 2006]. In our recent paper [Michaels et al., 2006], we took a different a...
